De Tierra co-owners Dan McDonnal and Alix Bosch not only embrace sustainable winemaking, they are passionate dog owners who are committed to helping the health and welfare of our four-legged friends. Their 2016 Frannin Red Blend is inspired by and named after their two beloved dogs, Freya and Annin, De Tierra’s official, four-legged ambassadors who are considered local celebrities in dog-friendly Carmel-by-the-Sea, and who can be found greeting visitors at the De Tierra Tasting Room at Mission Street and 5th Avenue.

Second Concert of Monterey Symphony’s 2019-2020 Season, ‘Ovation,’ Nov. 16-17, 2019, Features Guest Pianist Kun Woo Paik

The second concert of the Monterey Symphony’s six-concert 74th season “Ovation” will be held Nov. 16-17, 2019, with pianist Kun Woo Paik returning to the Symphony to perform two piano concerti.

Monterey, CA, October 29, 2019 — The second concert of the Monterey Symphony’s six-concert 74th season “Ovation” will be held Nov. 16-17, 2019, with pianist Kun Woo Paik returning to the Symphony to perform two piano concerti.

Max Bragado-Darman will conduct Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, KV 595, and Johannes Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 15, with guest pianist Paik.

Paik, winner of the Naumburg award and gold medallist at the Busoni International Piano Competitions, is considered one of the finest pianists of his generation.

Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 27, KV 595 is his last piano concerto ever written. Myths surrounding both its composition and premiere give the work an air of mystery.

Elegant in nature, the Mozart is complemented by Johannes Brahms’ 1st Piano Concerto, the first work Brahms ever premiered from the piano! Although Brahms was only 25 when he composed the work, the melodies are mature and sophisticated. The piece was composed two years after Schumann’s death and explores a complex set of emotions. Schumann played an important role in Brahms’ life and it is hard to not see the connection between them in some of his works.

Paik came to prominence at the age of 10 performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Korean National Orchestra. His international career took off soon after with his first New York recital at the Lincoln Center and his orchestral debut at Carnegie Hall.

Paik has collaborated all over the world with the most renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Lorin Maazel, Mariss Jansons, Neville Marriner, Jiří Bělohlávek, Vladimir Jurowski, Dmitri Kitaenko, Paavo Järvi, and Ivan Fischer, with orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, London Symphony, BBC Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Oslo Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony, and the Deutsche Bremen Kammerphilharmonie. He has recently performed with the New York Philharmonic, Lucerne and Berlin Symphony orchestras and given recitals at Carnegie Hall, La Scala, the Mariinsky Theatre and all over Asia and Europe. His numerous recordings appear on BMG, Decca and Deutsche Grammophon. Kun Woo Paik studied at the Juilliard School in New York with Rosina Lhevinne and worked with Ilona Kabos, Guido Agosti and Wilhelm Kempff.

Performances on Saturdays are at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. One hour prior to every performance there will be a pre-concert lecture in the Hall of Sunset Center.

Subscriptions are available. Please contact the box office for availability at (831) 646-8511. For more information and pricing visit:

The Symphony’s season continues with Concert No. 3, Feb. 15-16, 2020, and features two massive symphonic works, both weaving elegant stories for the listener. The fourth concert of the season is set for March 14-15, 2020, and features guest conductor Oleg Caetani making his debut with the Symphony.

Concert No. 5, April 18-19, 2020, features Symphony favorite, violinist Judith Ingolfsson, performing Brahms’ violin concerto. The sixth and final concert will highlight works by Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler and be conducted by Symphony Music Director Max Bragado-Darman.

The roster of special events, luncheons and dinners includes six preview luncheons hosted on the Thursdays prior to each concert and five supper clubs to be held on Sundays after the matinee concerts (through April). Special Events culminate on May 17, 2020, with the Finale Celebration to give the Maestro a send-off worthy of his 15 years at the helm of the Symphony.

Concert 3: February 15-16, 2020
February’s program features two massive symphonic works, both weaving elegant stories for the listener. Edward Elgar’s Enigma Variations are comprised of 14 separate movements sketching a different friend or close acquaintance. Rather than depicting the person as a whole, a single element of their personality or relationship with Elgar is illustrated musically. The movement titles contain cryptograms or keys to the identity of the subject! Elgar started the work casually at the piano as an exercise to capture someone musically, and evolved it into a large and beloved symphonic work.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade is based on the Arabian Nights. Replete with Russian folk melodies, many excerpts of this piece are used for Olympic figure skating – making it a well-known and recognized work. Rimsky-Korsakov worked tirelessly on this composition, along with his ornate Russian Easter Overture and the completion of Alexander Borodin’s opera Prince Igor. The work features stunning and virtuosic violin solos — not to be missed!

Edward Elgar / Enigma Variations, Op. 36
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov / Scheherazade, Op. 35

Concert 4: March 14-15, 2020
Guest conductor Oleg Caetani hails from Italy and is making his debut with the Monterey Symphony. The son of famed conductor and composer, Igor Markevitch, Caetani completed his formal training at the Moscow Conservatory and graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He won the RAI Competition and third prize at the Karajan Competition in Berlin.

Tchaikovsky’s 3rd Symphony, “Polish,” opens the program. This symphony is unique in that it is his only Symphony both in a major key, and containing five movements. The piece, sans first movement, was used by choreographer George Balanchine for Diamonds, the third and final part of his ballet Jewels. Various instruments are showcased in this iconic work, including a lovely flute solo in the third movement.

The second half of the program contains Shostakovich’s 15th Symphony, written in 1971 and premiered in Moscow, which is full of references to other composer’s works. Shostakovich tips his hat to Rossini and Glinka, as well as featuring the “Fate” motif from Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle.

Oleg Caetani, one of the greatest conductors of his generation, moves freely between symphonic and opera repertoire. Caetani has conducted all over the world including: La Scala in Milan, the Mariinsky in Saint Petersburg, the Royal Opera House in London, the Opera House in San Francisco, the Musikverein in Vienna, Lincoln Center in New York and Suntory Hall in Japan, working with the greatest soloists of our days.

Oleg was chief designate at the ENO in 2005, chief designate 2002-2005 for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Music Conductor and Artistic Director for the same orchestra from 2005 to 2009. Before that, Caetani was the Principal Conductor for the Staatskapelle Weimar, First Kapellmeister of the Frankfurt Opera and GMD in Wiesbaden and in Chemnitz.

Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky / Symphony No. 3, Op. 29
Dmitri Shostakovich / Symphony No. 15, Op. 141

Concert 5: April 18-19, 2020
A Monterey Symphony favorite, violinist Judith Ingolfsson returns in April to perform Brahms’ violin concerto. Judith is currently Professor at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart and co-artistic director and founder of the Festival “Aigues-Vives en Musiques” in France.

Brahms’ violin concerto was written for Joseph Joachim and is the only violin concerto he wrote. Marked by soaring melodies for the violin, it contains some of the most challenging passages for the instrument.

Jean Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony was started in Italy and completed in Helsinki. Sibelius himself declared the work “a confession of my soul.” The piece was premiered with the composer conducting and received three back-to-back sold out performances! A beloved work, after his wildly popular tone poem Finlandia, the 2nd Symphony is Sibelius at his finest with whimsical touches throughout!

Violinist Judith Ingolfsson is recognized for her intense, commanding performances, uncompromising musical maturity, and charismatic performance style. Based in Berlin and enjoying a global career, she performs as soloist, chamber musician and in recital as the Duo Ingolfsson-Stoupel. The New York Times has characterized her playing as producing “both fireworks and a singing tone” and Strings Magazine described her tone as “gorgeous, intense, and variable, flawlessly pure and beautiful in every register.”

Ingolfsson studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She has also been appointed to the violin faculty at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University.

Judith Ingolfsson, violin
Jean Sibelius / Symphony No. 2, Op. 43

Concert 6: May 16-17, 2020
The season concludes with Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. Both of these works require intense playing from the orchestra and give our fabulous Monterey Symphony the chance to boldly shine! Strauss’ Don Juan is a powerful tone poem for large orchestra featuring many passages used for Symphony auditions. The piece is based on the unfinished poem Don Juans Ende which tells the story of a man searching for love, which he never finds.

Symphony No. 1 by Gustav Mahler, or “The Titan,” was composed in 1887–1888 in Leipzig and premiered in 1889. There are as many as six versions of the work, as Mahler was impassioned about perfecting it. He borrowed from some of his own works, and highlighted certain lied, or songs, in the movements. At one point there was an additional movement, which Mahler rejected after the first few performances. This Symphony is massive, lush, and gorgeous — a fitting end to a season deserving of many ovations!

Max Bragado-Darman has served as Music Director of the Monterey Symphony since 2004. He was Music Director/Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Castile and León in Valladolid, Spain, for nine years. With this ensemble he recorded works of Turina and Rodrigo and the cello concerti of Alberto Ginastera on the Naxos Label. He also recorded the flute and clarinet concerti by Joan Tower on the Opus One label.

In 1995, Max Bragado-Darman was appointed Music Director and Conductor of the Louisville Orchestra. He has worked with artists Alicia de Larrocha, Teresa Berganza, Horacio Gutiérrez, Elmar Oliveira, Dubravka Tomsic, André Watts, Angel Romero, Gary Graffman, and Aaron Rosand.

In 2003, he made his debut at the Wexford Opera Festival with the Granados opera “María del Carmen.” His conducting has been guided by teachers Robert Fountain, Robert Baustian, George Szell, Igor Markevich and Franco Ferrara. He has been the conductor for the “Iturbi Piano Competition” in Valencia, Spain in several editions.

Twisted Roots offers Wine discounts for all Active and Retired Military throughout Veterans Day weekend

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, acknowledging the first anniversary of the end of World War I.

Carmel Valley, CA, October 22, 2019 - Veterans Day began as Armistice Day, acknowledging the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938.

It’s a somber date intended to honor and thank military personnel — particularly living veterans — who served the country in all wars.

To honor the commitment and sacrifice of our veterans, Twisted Roots Winery is offering a 30 percent discount on purchases for all active and retired military (both in the tasting room and online orders) throughout Veterans Day weekend. The winery’s Carmel Valley tasting room will be closed on Saturday, Nov. 9, but veterans can go online and use the coupon code THANKYOU to earn the discount.

On Veterans Day weekend, Twisted Roots will also send a thank you gift to Specialist Five James C. McCloughan, a combat medic in Vietnam who earned the Medal of Honor for his service with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Americal Division (March 1969 to March 1970). McCloughan served with Mike Hodge, the father of Twisted Roots co-owner Julie Ruiz.

Known for its Old Vine Zinfandel from the highly regarded Lodi Appellation, Twisted Roots also makes award-winning Cabernet, Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, Blanc de Blanc, Traditional Brut and Sparkling Brut Rosé. For something different, try the Twisted Roots light, crisp hard cider made from a unique combination of five apple varieties.

Twisted Roots’ newly renovated tasting room in Carmel Valley offers a unique wine-tasting experience — either inside or under the sun on the outdoor patio. Located at 12 Del Fino Place in Carmel Valley, the tasting room is open noon to 5 p.m. from Thursday through Sunday.

Month-Long Vacation Rentals Offer Many Advantages to the Discerning Traveler

Anyone who has stayed in a short-term vacation rental is well aware of the advantages of staying in a private home rather than traditional traveler lodging — better price, more flexibility, more space, more choices, and so forth.

Monterey, CA, October 20, 2019 — Anyone who has stayed in a short-term vacation rental is well aware of the advantages of staying in a private home rather than traditional traveler lodging — better price, more flexibility, more space, more choices, and so forth.

Those advantages are still applicable when one opts for a longer-term vacation rental, such as a one-month rental. Thirty days may seem a like a long time, but when you vacation in an area such as the Monterey Peninsula, a few days is certainly not enough to see and experience all the area has to offer.

The vacation rental professionals at Monterey-based Sanctuary Vacation Rentals, which was founded more than 11 years ago and represents more than 100 homes across the Monterey Peninsula, specializes in both short-term and longer-term rentals and have surveyed both renters and owners about the advantages and disadvantages of both.

“Renting for 30 days creates a mutually beneficial situation,” said Annee Martin, Sanctuary Vacation Rentals, Owner/President/Design Team/Realtor. “Homeowners gain security by renting for large chunks of time. And renters can really live the life of a local, not a tourist, exploring every corner of this beautiful region while enjoying all the comforts of a true home away from home.”

Here are seven reasons to rent a one-month vacation rental:

1. You have a home base. It’s your home away from home. You can sleep in, go on an outing, shopping, sightseeing or whatever it is that you would want to do. There are no check-out times. You will not be woken up by housekeeping knocking on the door. If you’re not feeling well, you can stay in for a day and rest and recuperate and not feel that you’re missing out.

2. You only need to unpack and pack once. You can unpack everything you brought with you without having to worry about packing up in a day or two, giving you more leisure time. And you’re not living out of your suitcase.

3. You have more room and more time to use it. Vacation rentals have much more space than the average hotel room. There’s more room to stretch out, relax and use areas of the home you may not use if you’re only there for a day or two. Plus, there are usually more bathrooms and areas where you can get away from everyone else and have some quiet alone time.

4. You can choose the type of property with the amenities and comforts you want. Unlike many hotels, you can pick a home that has a hot tub, Jacuzzi or even a pool or one that comes furnished with fire pits and gas barbecue grills. Some homes even come equipped with beach toys, bicycles, and other recreational equipment.

5. You can save money. By grocery shopping and cooking some meals “at home,” you can save money and use it on excursions and sightseeing instead of eating out every night. And if you want to eat out, you still have that option too. You can also split the costs with your friends and family and use it on weekends and still be ahead.

6. You have more flexibility. You can plan longer excursions or short trips or do them in stages, knowing you have more than a day or two to experience them all. You can invite family and friends to visit on weekends or for a couple of days.

7. Finally, you can do all of the above in the location of your dreams. Vacation rentals give you more options than a hotel room, whether it’s a quaint Carmel cottage or a multi-room Pebble Beach mansion with an expansive view, you’ll be able to find something that fits your dream perfectly.

For more information on one-month vacation rentals and all the options available to you, go to https://www.sanctuaryvacationrentals.com or call Sanctuary toll-free at (800) 614-6706.

Santa Cruz Author’s Visually Stunning yet Practical ‘Posy Book’ the Perfect Holiday Stocking Stuffer

Gifting flowers conveys emotions and messages that can’t always be articulated in words.

Santa Cruz, CA, October 17, 2019 - Gifting flowers conveys emotions and messages that can’t always be articulated in words. Santa Cruz author Teresa Sabankaya helps translate those feelings for us in “The Posy Book: Garden-Inspired Bouquets that Tell a Story.”

Just in time for the holidays, this inspiring book — a perfect hostess gift or stocking stuffer — shows readers how to communicate exactly the right sentiment with exactly the right flower.

Inspired by the Victorian-era language of flowers, a posy is a small circular gathering of flowers, plants and herbs chosen to communicate a particular emotion or sentiment.

Sabankaya provides detailed recipes for posies for a variety of sentiments. Thanks to her step-by-step instructions, you’ll have the confidence to make your own personalized arrangement. Make someone feel like a queen for a day with a posy made with calla lily and gardenias (which convey magnificent beauty and feminine charm). Or let that certain bestie know that you’ll be friends to the end with oak-leaf geraniums and mint. The sentiments are endless.

In the book’s foreword, New York Times best-selling author Amy Stewart writes: “Teresa has woven her wisdom, spirit, and artistry into this beautiful book. In these pages you’ll see that anyone can make a posy. Like a favorite recipe, it’s meant to be savored and shared.”

Purchase the book directly through the author’s website at www.teresasabankaya.com, or find it at local bookstores or online through Amazon.

Cinq Mondes Spa in Carmel Will Host a ‘No-Tox & Bubbles’ Party Nov. 7, 2019, to Get Ready for the Holidays

Cinq Mondes Spa Carmel, the French cosmetic company's flagship location in the U.S., will get ready for the holidays by hosting a No-Tox & Bubbles Party on November 7, 2019, at the spa in Carmel.

Carmel, CA, October 15, 2019 — Cinq Mondes Spa Carmel, the French cosmetic company's flagship location in the U.S., will get ready for the holidays by hosting a No-Tox & Bubbles Party on November 7, 2019, at the spa in Carmel.

The festive event, from 5:30–7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, will feature non-toxic skin treatments by homeopathic doctor Dr. Rozlynn Trotter, HD, as well as Prosecco, light hors d'oeuvres and makeup applications by Nicole.

Dr. Trotter is a leader in women’s health, drawing on many years of experience in integrative and functional medicine, nutrition, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine and Vega biofeedback. As a Homeopathic doctor, Dr. Trotter brings both insight and compassion to individuals seeking vitality and optimum health.

Dr. Trotter is owner of Crossroads Health and Beauty in Cinq Mondes Spa Carmel, located at 118 Crossroad Blvd., The Crossroads, in Carmel. Dr. Trotter offers a number of services, including custom therapeutic injections (such as B12, energy and anti-aging boosters), cutting-edge facial rejuvenation, non-surgical face and neck lifts, décolleté and hands, exosomes (stem cells), microneedling, scar and stretch mark removal, detox, nutrition, homeopathy and emotional healing.

“Skin undergoes physiological changes as a consequence of the aging process.

There are two types of skin aging, intrinsic and extrinsic aging,” says Dr. Trotter. “Intrinsic aging is genetically determined, meaning it’s inevitable as time passes. Epigenetic changes and post-translational mechanisms are more important pathways of intrinsic aging rather than genetic influences. How the genes are expressed.

“Extrinsic aging occurs by external factors such as smoking, air pollution, unbalanced nutrition, UV exposure known as photo aging,” she adds. “Photo aging being the most visibly damaging to skin aging causing irregular pigmentation, dryness, sallowness, roughness, premalignant lesions and skin cancer. Intrinsic skin aging is characterized by a loss of elasticity and fine wrinkles rather than deep wrinkles due to photo aging.

“I am excited to tell you that you can now regenerate your skin naturally and non-surgically with exosomes,” says Dr. Trotter. “These powerful messengers derived from stem cells dramatically improve the quality and texture of all skin types. Formulated using dermal fibroblast exosomes, growth factors, micro RNA, proteins and peptides to restore both the youthful contour and shape of the face as well as improve skin quality, tightness, and color irregularities caused by the extrinsic and intrinsic aging.

“It works with topical application and/or intradermal injections of exosomes.

Tissue abrasion using micro-needling stimulates a wound-healing response. Delivering the exosomes in the micro-channels to the skin aid in the production of collagen, elastin, and regenerates the aging skin restoring the skin to a youthful appearance.

“Intradermal injections of exosomes are a natural alternative for Botox. Our future of aesthetics is stem cells. Plastics, fillers and toxic injections are being replaced with natural human dermal derived stem cells. Come and experience the future of skin care.”

Salinas, CA, October 08, 2019 - How much would you pay for a cookie? What if the cookie was not only delicious but part of a sweet fundraising campaign that aims to make a difference in the fight against pediatric cancer?

On Wednesday, Oct. 16, all Goodwill Central Coast stores will be offering delicious treats from Pacific Cookie Company — with all proceeds supporting Cookies for Kids' Cancer. You can choose your donation amount for a cookie, and Goodwill will match it!

Tragically, cancer is the No. 1 cause of death in children by disease in the United States. There are 40,000 U.S. children actively battling cancer right now. With less than 4 percent of the National Cancer Institute's budget going to all childhood cancers combined, donations are critical in making a difference for these kids.

Yeast of Eden welcomes Autumn with Seasonal Brews, Cocktails and a new Food Menu Launching Oct. 11

Rarely is the end of summer celebrated, but Yeast of Eden in Carmel is brewing up excitement around the flavors of fall — making the shorter days and chillier air more tolerable.

Carmel, CA, October 08, 2019 - Rarely is the end of summer celebrated, but Yeast of Eden in Carmel is brewing up excitement around the flavors of fall — making the shorter days and chillier air more tolerable.

It begins in the barrel room with head brewer Andrew Rose, who named his latest creation Astral Seasons, a mixed-fermentation saison conditioned with local Blenheim apricots from B&R Farms in Hollister.

The beer’s dry, effervescent finish brings mango and earthy notes intertwined with bursts of apricot. In addition to the 18 Yeast of Eden beers currently on tap, Yeast of Eden offers a local wine list and full bar with a rotation of seasonal cocktails.

The latest libation, called Binding Arbitration, is a smooth and slightly bitter bourbon cocktail featuring Cynar (an Italian bitter liqueur), Yellow Chartreuse (an herbal liqueur first produced by French monks) and lemon, shaken and served up. The new Spiced Island Cream tastes like fall in a glass, featuring a combination of spiced rum, coconut milk, cinnamon and egg white, served up with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

While the Yeast of Eden bar finds inspiration in the changing seasons, chef Florencio Cruz is set to launch his new fall menu on Friday, Oct. 11. Seasonal dishes include: roasted butternut squash soup with crème fraiche, chives and toasted pepita seeds; and a refreshing fall salad with mixed greens, kale, quinoa, apples, butternut squash, goat cheese and an apple cider vinaigrette. Guests can make dishes even heartier by adding chicken or the fresh catch of the day atop any salad.

For dessert, the Yeast of Eden kitchen puts a vibrant twist on a classic chocolate mousse with the addition of ginger mascarpone and yuzu gelée.

About Yeast of Eden

Big Sur Health Center Celebrates Its 40th Anniversary at Annual Big Sur Health Fair, Set for Oct. 8, 2019

The Big Sur Health Center’s Health Fair has been held for almost 20 years, but this year’s event, set for Oct. 8, takes on a little more significance.

Big Sur, CA, October 02, 2019 — The Big Sur Health Center’s Health Fair has been held for almost 20 years, but this year’s event, set for Oct. 8, takes on a little more significance.

In addition to free flu shots, counseling, a free barbecue, live music and more, the non-profit Health Center will be celebrating its 40th anniversary at the popular event, which is set for noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, on the grounds of the center at 46896 Highway 1, in Big Sur.

The fair will also offer free blood pressure checks, cholesterol and blood sugar screening through Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula (CHOMP), free counseling services by BSHC medical providers and nutritionists from CHOMP who can answer questions about diet, lifestyle and weight. The cholesterol and blood sugar screenings are done through a simple finger-stick and results will be available instantaneously.

At 2 p.m., speakers from foundations that support the center (Community Foundation for Monterey County, Monterey Peninsula Foundation and the Harden Foundation), CHOMP President/CEO Dr. Steven Packer, and some of our elected officials will celebrate the 40th anniversary during a short program.

“Sometimes I have to pinch myself; it’s hard to believe it’s been 40 years. I wish I had kept a diary. There have been so many bumps in the road, but we’ve weathered them all,” said Sharen Carey, executive director of BSHC, who has been involved with the center in various capacities since 1985. “It’s been such a joy to see it grow from the early days to what it is now, being open five days a week and so busy it’s hard to keep up. We have a wonderful professional staff and the great support of our board of directors.”

The Health Fair had initially been founded to serve and inform the local workforce, but it has grown to be a cherished community event.

“We targeted local businesses because we want to keep our workforce healthy, but the health fair is open to everyone,” says Carey. “We’ve even had tourists who dropped by and were thrilled to participate. It’s always a wonderful way for community members to get together. It feels like a reunion and gives us time to visit with our neighbors and friends.”

There will be a free organic barbecue for lunch, music by Monterey Peninsula musician Rick Chelew, as well as a Children’s Corner with books, toys and games. It’s a fun and lively event, but the fair is all about early prevention of health problems.

“We’re all about prevention, that’s what the Health Fair is all about,” says Carey.

As the Health Center celebrates its 40th year, Carey says she’s encouraged about the future of the center.

“The Health Center, by all standards, should have gone out of business a long time ago,” she says. “The statistics say that you need 5,000 people for one health provider, and our community is 1,600, with about 300-400 who come from the Peninsula. So we’ve overcome those statistics through the generosity of our foundations and many donors.

“We used to have a receptionist who would say to me, when we would have a problem, ‘Sharen, it’s OK, the Health Center has a life of its own.’ It’s been my mantra ever since.”

For more information on the Health Fair, call (831) 667-2580.

About Big Sur Health Center
BSHC was founded in September 1979, through a local, grass-roots effort, to meet the needs of this rural community through its mission to provide quality comprehensive medical care to all in Big Sur regardless of ability to pay. In 1985, BSHC became a 501(c)(3) corporation with a volunteer Board of Directors. That same year BSHC relocated from the Big Sur Grange Hall to the grounds of the All Saints Episcopal Church of Carmel, 1/8 mile south of the Big Sur River Inn.

Ultimately, through a community-wide fundraising and development effort by BSHC and volunteer members of the Big Sur community, along with financial support from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and other foundations, we opened a new 2,100 sq. ft. medical facility in November 2004 to replace an aging building that we had long-past outgrown.

The presence of BSHC is crucial to the welfare of the Big Sur Community. As the only medical facility between the Monterey Peninsula (30 miles to the north) and Cambria (70 miles to the south), BSHC plays a vital role in the local community, serving the health care needs of the population by providing local, culturally and linguistically appropriate, affordable, quality medical care.

The hazardous coastline of Big Sur, combined with extreme weather conditions, road closures and frequent large-scale fires, underscores the critical need for the local presence of BSHC. Our centrally located facility is easily accessible to residents and tourists with urgent care needs. During road closures and other community disasters, BSHC provides 24-hour-on-call service, home welfare visits, medication service (at times, via helicopter transport) and coordination with local emergency teams.

From the early days at the Grange Hall, providing basic first aid, BSHC has developed into a busy family practice with over 1,200 patient visits annually.

Monterey Symphony Opens 74th Season Ovation Oct. 19-20 2019, With Works By Berlioz, Dvořák and Featuring Violinist and Concertmaster Christina Mok

The Monterey Symphony opens its 74th season Ovation on Oct. 19 and 20, 2019, with a party and concert at Sunset Center in Carmel.

Monterey, CA, September 30, 2019 — The Monterey Symphony opens its 74th season Ovation on Oct. 19 and 20, 2019, with a party and concert at Sunset Center in Carmel.

Celebrate the start of the 74th season with a sparkling, celestial party on the lower Terrace of the Sunset Center Saturday evening. Get in the mood for a season of Ovation with aerial artistry by Erin Jane, decadent desserts by Parker Lusseau and delicious local wines from Chalone Vineyards. Opening Night Party admission is included with all Saturday night tickets.

The season opens with Roman Carnival Overture, Op. 9 by Hector Berlioz, Antonín Dvořák's Romance, Op.11 for violin and orchestra, featuring Concertmaster Christina Mok, and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Romance, a delightful, single-movement work, was commissioned to serve as an annual musical tradition for the Provisional Theatre Orchestra in Prague. Based on a theme from the second movement of his fifth string quartet, Romance is a lovely interplay between the violinist and the orchestra. Other iterations of the melody were presented in his later works — it was an obvious favorite of Dvořák's!

Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, Op.14 takes the mercurial, and often tragic, life of an artist and sets it to music. The title underlines not only the fantastic musical fireworks that take place on stage, but also a fantasy Berlioz was demonstrating. Written as an homage to unrequited love—the result of too many unanswered love letters — Berlioz uses the voices of the instruments to explain his emotions. The work travels through the artist's life, culminating in his own funeral in the wildly intense final movement.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19 and 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, 2019.
